Don’t Call Them A Cover Band!

Rockin’ the banks of the mighty Ohio river is a band you won’t find anywhere but in the tri-state area. The songs sound familiar, but Gypzy Roze takes every song they play and put their own twist on it. I had the chance to catch up with the band in between sets at the Ashland Eagles where they were playing. Celesta Reed, lead vocals, has played with Soul Intensity which used to play at Sharkey’s in Huntington. She was also front woman for Burning Creek. Mike Boggs, lead guitar, was in such bands as L.A. To Memphis, Burn, and One Eyed Gypsy which eventually evolved into Gypzy Roze. Donnie Stacy, rhythm guitar, comes from Excalibur, Zachariah, and VHF. Jason Fields, bass, came to the band from Common Ground, and Hydrogen. Mark Hardyman, drummer, was in 4 bands before coming with Gypzy Roze, and those bands were Rockin’ Horse, BFE, Cross Cut, and Red Dawg 9.

Now that we know a little about the band and where they came from, let’s talk about now. Gypzy Roze is a band that primarily plays the Ashland/Ironton area. They have been a band for about 2 years now, and they have only had 3 weekends off in 2 years. I asked them how often they practiced. Because of the tough economy, everyone works. So it’s hard to get together and practice. Their practice is on stage. They try something and if it works, they do it again. If it doesn’t work they can it.

This band has also traveled the open road touring. When asked what the craziest road story was they had Mike Boggs and the rest of the band remembered a time in Jane Lew, WV. They were on a hydraulic stage and the stage manager had told them he was going to lift them up to the ceiling then bring them down to stage level. Every member of the band’s neck and shoulders were cramped as they were waiting for this guy to let the stage down. Mike says he was supposed to hit a button and the stage was supposed to descend. However, when he looked down at the guy, HE WAS BEATING THIS BUTTON! The hydraulic system had failed. They were well into playing their second song before someone let them down with a hand crank.

The band also recalled a time when they were at Taco Bell in Charleston, WV. It was 2:30 a.m. Someone thought it would be a good idea to take the truck & the trailer through the drive-thru. Needless to say, it got stuck and Donnie was trying to direct him out of the jam they were in.

The band is so busy playing gigs, they really don’t have time to practice. Celesta has a whole book of songs that she has wrote and Mike has a few he wrote as well. The only trouble is, no one can get any time off to be able to practice these original songs. So they play what everyone knows. That’s what generates their income.

Mark, the drummer, announced to everyone, while we were at the show, that his fiancé, Sierra, and him will be getting married very soon. This was an awesome announcement that totally shocked most of the band. Except Celesta because she already knew.

Gypzy Roze is a band that is very involved with their crowd. I actually had the pleasure of singing with them at Frogtown USA in Ironton during Rally On The River. We had lighters and cell phones in the air enjoying the music as about 1,000 people sat there and sang along with the song. They have spent a lot of time together as a band and they just click. The reason why I titled this article “Don’t Call Them A Cover Band” is because, although they are playing the familiar favorites of the crowd, it’s not the same riffs, the same drum beats, the same bass line. Gypzy Roze has a way of twisting it and turning it to not only make it their own, but make it sound fantastic.

When asked what the purpose of their band was, they said they just want to entertain. They want to play music the people will enjoy. Most everyone enjoys songs they know because of the radio. They also told me, if a big break were to come, they would take it without hesitation. Music is about fun. It’s not about drama. Music is therapeutic. It can lift ones soul and take it to new heights. Gypzy Roze isn’t trying to rock your face off like say Avenged Sevenfold would. They don’t want mosh pits and headbangers. They just want to have fun doing what they love which, as you can tell. Is playing music. They are all a very talented group of musicians. If you are thinking about booking them for an event, you should probably do that soon. Their schedule fills up quickly. Why? They are a requested band in the area. People want them to play in their clubs. It’s great entertainment. They also know with the following of Gypzy Roze, they’ll pack a house and keep it packed. Much like they did tonight at the Ashland Eagles. I would like to thank Celesta, Donnie, Mike, Mark, and Jason for coming down and talking to me between sets.

Telecommunications Fraud

Ok first off, Look at this dude's mustache!!!! Are you serious?? Second, they charged this guy with telecommunications fraud. HOW? Here's the full story.

SCIOTO COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) – A man from Franklin Furnace has been arrested on 19 counts of telecommunication fraud.

The Scioto County Sheriff’s Office says they received reports from numerous businesses about a man calling and telling female employees about different sexual acts he was performing or wanted to perform.

Detectives tell WSAZ.com they were able to trace those calls and charged 40-year-old David Bower of Franklin Furnace. He is being held in the Scioto County Jail.

Detectives say they were able to determine that Bower would go to these businesses, see woman working, and then called those workers while parked outside the business.

Detectives learned that Bower had already done time in prison for the same charges.

But if you look up the definition of fraud, according to Wikipedia:

Telecommunication fraud is the theft of telecommunication service (telephones, cell phones, computers etc.) or the use of telecommunication service to commit other forms of fraud. Victims include consumers, businesses and communication service providers.

I'm not siding with this dude...I'm just saying I'm not sure i agree with the charge for what he did.

So, let me just update you on what's going on with me real quick before i get into this story. I am now the lead singer/bass player for a band that just started a couple months ago. Now that you know that, on with the rest of the story. I was taking the guitar player home who lives in Culloden Manor in Culloden, WV. While driving out Charlies Creek Road I get pulled over by a state trooper. He comes up to the door of my car and says step out of the car. I did as I was instructed and he says "Do you know why I pulled you over?" To which I replied, "Not really." He then proceeded to tell me that a white Buick with Ohio tags was recently linked to a drug bust in that area. Then he said the white Buick was said to have as he called "Dope" in it. I informed the officer there were no drugs in the vehicle. After running my information, he found that I was running improper registration, issued me a citation and said sorry for the inconvenience. Will it ever end with the boys in blue?? I hope so because I'm about tired of dealing with the law!

I was there the night this went down. I was on the porch smoking when I felt the warm air blast against my cheek after the explosion. According to the bartender LJ, The bomber met another patron there at the bar. They met, they fell in love, they got married, it was a whirlwind romance, and the bottom fell out of it. The couple were getting a divorce. He's been barred out of the bar 3 times for harassing his ex wife. He showed up friday night in jean bibbed overalls, a wig, and a fake beard. They found a bomb over by the walk in cooler, one at one corner of the bar, one in his vehicle, and the one that was strapped to him. He did make an attempt to get inside the bar but was denied entry. His plan was to destroy the bar that destroyed his marriage. He was out back and decided he wanted to light a cigarette. He caught his fake beard on fire which ignited the wick on the pipe bomb. It was a scary experience but the bar remains open and all the loyal customers are in good spirits. I have a greater appreciation for life after this. I invite you to come down and check the place out. I have heard some people talking about being scared. Yeah, we are scared. But, we also think it worked out the way it was supposed to. It's a great bar and great people. You should come check it out for yourself.

Phillies fan tasered after running onto field

PHILADELPHIA — A police officer used a Taser gun to apprehend a fan who ran onto the field during a Phillies game Monday night, and the team and the police are investigating whether it was an appropriate use of force.

The fan, wearing a baseball cap, red T-shirt and khaki shorts, hopped a fence and scurried around the outfield, eluding two security officers in the bottom of the eighth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals. One officer used a Taser and the fan went down in a heap. Several Phillies placed gloves over their faces and appeared to be stifling laughter at the wild scene.

Phillies spokeswomen Bonnie Clark said the police department is investigating the matter and discussing with the team whether using the stun gun was appropriate.

Police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore told The Philadelphia Inquirer police internal affairs will open an investigation to determine if the firing "was proper use of the equipment."

Vanore was not made available to The Associated Press when a call was placed to the police department's public affairs office late Monday night.

The teams said it's the first time a Taser has been used by police to apprehend a spectator who ran onto the field.

The fan was 17-year-old male and he will be charged with criminal trespass and related offenses, the team said. The Phillies did not release his name because he is a juvenile.

So, we get done with the Kentucky game last night and what normally takes me about 30 minutes to get home took me OVER AN HOUR! This time, it wasn't weather related. When I drove across the WV bridge there in Chesapeake, there was a cop sitting there and saw me coming. I am aware of the fact that I have a burnt out head light. I'm waiting to get paid to fix it. Anyway, so the Chesapeake cop swings his car completely around and "lights me up." So, like a good law abiding citizen, I pull over. He then says, "Do you know why I pulled you over?" To which I replied, "Not really." He proceeds to tell me that I have a headlight out which I already knew. Then he tells me as I was stopping that one of my brake lights isn't working! Can it get any worse?? Everything comes back fine in Chesapeake so I mosy my little car down past Wal-Mart. No sooner than I get to the red light, a state highway patrol car whips around and "lights me up!" At this point I'm laughing. I'm just like, "REALLY?!?!?!" So he comes up and proceeds to tell me that my tags will expire on my birthday which is in 2 weeks. Also he tells me that my license plate cover covers up the word Ohio on my plates and that Ohio must be visible. I informed the cop that was the second time I had been stopped tonight. He issues me a Motor Vehicle Inspection Report. That little piece of paper says I am aware of the headlight and I will get it fixed when I can. I knew I was about to go through the rest of South Point & Coal Grove. The cop told me before I pulled away that if I present them with my license and that paper, all should be well. I finally made it home 1 hour later than I should have. I'm home now and all is well but it leaves me wondering. How many drunk drivers, meth heads, pill poppers, and hookers did you give up to get to the guy with the burnt out headlight? I'm just saying! JEEZ!

The Big Snow of 2010

Ok so it wasn't huge! But, it was a decent snow that closed a lot of schools and effected traveling. I drive to the radio station from Ironton everyday and give you kind of an insight as to what I was dealing with on the drive in. Enjoy!

Every good prepared person must have the proper roadside gear in case you get snowed in somewhere so here was mine.

My girlfriend decided to go to the grocery store. Some people a little too prepared for the beast that is mother nature!

The only milk left was Buttermilk! YUCK!

I was only home for 20 minutes my car, which was clear when I came home, looked like this when I went back outside to leave.

So now I'm in the car and this was the time I left.

After sitting in MAJOR traffic, which is odd for this area, I finally made it to Huntington @ this time.

I was so relieved to be in Huntington and that I made it safely to and from. Nothing worse than having to shell out all kinds of money for an unexpected car repair.

If image really is everything, why would Andre Agassi admit in his new book that he used crystal meth? Not once but dozens of times? And why would he admit he lied about it to the Association of Tennis Professionals?

Why would a son admit how much he feared his Iranian father -- feared him and hated him since the age of 7? And why -- why! -- would a man admit he wore perhaps the world's only Mohawk toupee?

Why? Because this isn't just any book.

This is Agassi's mea culpa -- "Open" (from Knopf, written with Pulitzer Prize winner J.R. Moehringer) -- and from the beginning, he and Moehringer set out to write the most revealing, literate and toes-stompingly honest sports autobiography in history. From the parts I've been allowed to read, they might have done it.

"I just tell people, this book is honest," says Agassi, who worked with Moehringer for a full year, meeting nearly daily at the Las Vegas house Agassi once lived in with Brooke Shields. "It lives up to the title. It's my life, for better or worse. Get ready, buckle up, and keep your arms and legs inside the vehicle at all times."

"Open" is the story of a flawed man who sees everybody's imperfections, but none more than his own. It's the tale of a man who knows how low he sunk if only because of the grand view he has now.

Agassi's early life was not his, never his, not from the beginning, not from the time his Olympic boxer father built a backyard prison especially for him, a tennis court he was figuratively chained to day after day, while his father's homemade ball machine -- the dragon, Agassi called it -- ceaselessly spit out balls faster, harder, forever.

Agassi bucked against tennis like a horse with a two-sizes-too-small bit. But he could not escape it. And so his life became a kind of lie, from his shoelace groundstrokes to his Mohawk, a hairpiece that once came apart in the shower before the French Open. The day was saved by bobby pins.

Your own life is hard enough. Living somebody else's life for them weighs on a man like a stone backpack. By 1997 -- even after winning an Olympic gold medal in 1996 -- Agassi was down, depressed and stuck playing a game he didn't love. He was physically wrecked (wrist) and emotionally spent. He was with the wrong woman -- Shields -- and knew it.

He'd sunk to No. 141 in the world. He recalls that he was sitting at home when his assistant, Slim, introduced him to one of the most addictive substances known to man:

Slim says, You want to get high with me?

On what?

Gack.

What the hell's gack?

Crystal meth.

Why do they call it gack?

Because that's the sound you make when you're high. Make you feel like Superman, dude.

As if they're coming out of someone else's mouth, I hear these words: You know what? F*** it. Yeah. Let's get high.

Agassi pulled himself out of the French Open that year and hardly practiced for Wimbledon. That fall, it got worse. The ATP informed him at the end of 1997 that he'd flunked a drug test. He would likely be looking at a three-month suspension. He would probably lose all his endorsements and most of his fans.

What to do? Keep lying.

Agassi admits he wrote a letter to the ATP saying Slim accidentally "spiked" his drink, that it was not his fault. The ATP dropped the flunked test, with no discipline for Agassi. He admits in the book he felt "ashamed."

It was the lowest point in a life that would suddenly begin to soar. You can condemn Agassi all you want for the crystal meth -- and he'd deserve it -- but remember, Agassi dropped the habit soon after. Then, in 1998, he made the biggest one-year jump into the Top 10 in the history of the ATP Rankings, going from his year-end 122 to No. 6. He'd win five of his eight major titles after finding the bottom.

They call Agassi the greatest returner in history. They aren't kidding.

We all know what became of the showy, glitzy kid with all that fake hair and real talent. He shaved his hair off. He started being real. He learned to love tennis, and tennis learned to love him. The kid who never got past the ninth grade in school wound up funding and running the prestigious Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy in Las Vegas. The man who couldn't find the right woman finally married the one everybody wanted -- tennis goddess Steffi Graf. And the son who hated his father learned to love him and his own two kids.

Why is Agassi so scorchingly honest in these excerpts? Maybe because he once lived enough lies for five men. Or maybe because, as an educator, he's heard the truth can set him free.

But hopefully, by the time you close "Open," you'll know that this book is about more than the wrong turns he took. It's about how that broken road led him straight to the good man he is now.
